1.  Open space = freedom, which makes people want to share ideas.  It allows innovation.  Without open space, there is no space for ideas.

2. Elements which foster open space:                          

-Leadership style

-Physical environment

-Trust

-Feeling safe enough to disagree

3. Innovation culture requires lots of ideas flowing through the system on an ongoing basis

4.      Creating Innovation in an organization

-Physical environment

-Innovation is integrated into the reward structure

-Ideas must be acted on

-Individuals should feel the ability to have impact

-Idea generation must be encouraged (spirit,library, training,suggestion box, etc.)

-Leaders must model and drive the behavior

-Job rotation is encouraged

-Should keep choices in front of people

- Must keep the “space” open

- Be aware that innovation can move in cycles

5.      Measures of innovation

-#new products

-#viable new ideas

-Employee satisfaction survey (with section focusing on innovation climate?)

-Blockages to innovation in the organization

However, must be careful that measurements do not start limiting amount of innovation.  Measuring/tracking can become counterproductive

7. Distinguish  between innovation and creation.  Innovative ideas must be viable.

8.  Gung-Ho Training:

Three animals:

- Beaver – value of teamwork

-  Goose – value of encouragement, motivation

-  Squirrel – value of individual’s work

For innovation, must keep the space open

Innovation can move in cycles
